Reston has no town public works department. The Virginia Department of Transportation maintains most public roads here, Fairfax County builds some local projects, and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority runs the Dulles Toll Road. Here is who handles what, and the work under way or planned in Reston.
Who to call
- Potholes, signals, signs, fallen trees on public roads: VDOT Highway Help Line, 1-800-367-7623 (1-800-FOR-ROAD), TTY 711, or my.vdot.virginia.gov
- Live closures and work zones: 511 Virginia, or dial 511
- Dulles Toll Road: Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority
- The few county-maintained roads: Fairfax County, 703-877-2800
- Private and HOA roads: your association or property manager
Who maintains your road
Fairfax County’s road maintenance page says any road with a route number, such as Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) or Wiehle Avenue (Route 828), is a VDOT road. That covers most primary and secondary roads. Very few miles are maintained by the county. Many private roads are maintained by homeowner and civic associations, condominium and apartment complexes or businesses, the county says. If you are not sure, VDOT will tell you: 1-800-367-7623 or novainfo@vdot.virginia.gov. The county’s road maintenance map also shows responsibility street by street.

Sunrise Valley Drive walkway
The county’s project page describes a 10-foot-wide walkway along the north side of Sunrise Valley Drive between Reston Parkway and Soapstone Drive, about 1,490 feet in three segments, linking the Reston Town Center Metro station to nearby neighborhoods. The work adds ADA curb ramps, high-visibility crosswalks, new lighting and pedestrian signals at Colts Neck Road and a median refuge island at Indian Ridge Road. Expect shoulder and sidewalk work zones on Sunrise Valley Drive until the project wraps up, expected in November.
Soapstone Connector
VDOT’s project page describes a new half-mile extension of Soapstone Drive from Sunrise Valley Drive north to Sunset Hills Road, on a new bridge over the Dulles Toll Road, the airport access highway and the Metro Silver Line. It would have one lane each way, a shared-use path on the east side and a two-way bike track and sidewalk on the west side, with new signals at both ends. The aim is to ease delays at the Reston Parkway and Wiehle Avenue crossings of the toll road.
VDOT’s milestones:
- Location and design public hearing: early 2027
- Right-of-way acquisition: early 2028
- Utility relocation: mid-2030
- Construction start: late 2032
The estimated cost is $269.5 million. Fairfax County’s Soapstone Connector page holds the environmental documents.
W&OD Trail bridge at Wiehle Avenue
The trail bridge over Wiehle Avenue near the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station replaced an at-grade crossing. The county says construction was substantially complete on July 29, 2025.
