How Dominion restores power
From Dominion’s restoration page:
- Repair damage to transmission towers, high-voltage lines and substations.
- Clear obstructions and repair primary distribution poles and lines.
- Inspect and repair secondary service drops in residential areas.
That order is why a street can have power while one house does not. Damage from the weatherhead down to your meter base belongs to you: an electrician must repair it before Dominion can reconnect your power.
Stay safe in an outage
- Never connect a portable generator to your home’s wiring; it can send power back into the lines and injure utility workers. Run generators outdoors, away from windows and anything flammable. Carbon monoxide from generators and gas heaters is odorless and can kill.
- Turn off or unplug appliances and electronics you were using when the power went out, to avoid damage from surges when it comes back.
- When power returns, throw out food that sat above 40 degrees for two hours or more, or that smells, looks or feels wrong.
