Wiehle-Reston East is the Metro station area at Reston’s east end, around the Wiehle Avenue exit of the Dulles Toll Road. Fairfax County’s Reston plan plans it for “a mix of mid-rise and high-rise buildings with diverse land uses.” Today it holds Reston Station’s apartment and office towers over the Metro garage, office parks along Sunset Hills Road and Sunrise Valley Drive, and apartments and townhouses, with single-family neighborhoods just across Sunrise Valley Drive.

Where it is

The county’s Reston Transit Station Areas map layer puts the area at about 750 acres. The plan describes two halves:

  • North of the toll road: bounded by the Hidden Creek golf course on the north, Lake Fairfax Park on the northeast, the toll road on the south and the Plaza America shopping center on the west. Sunset Hills Road runs east and west through it and Wiehle Avenue north and south. Reston Station sits in the northwest corner of Wiehle Avenue and the toll road, “on top of a seven level, county-owned and operated transit center and park-and-ride facility with 2,300 parking spaces.” East of Wiehle is the approved Mid-Line development. Isaac Newton Square, between Wiehle Avenue, Sunset Hills Road and the golf course, is planned as “a new residential neighborhood organized around a local-serving park,” and includes Wiehle Avenue Fire Station No. 25.
  • South of the toll road: east and west of Wiehle Avenue to Sunrise Valley Drive, including the Association Drive office area and Roland Clarke Place, where the plan notes a seven-story apartment building. “Compatibility with the existing single-family neighborhoods located across Sunrise Valley Drive is a primary concern,” it says.

OpenStreetMap names Reston Station and Sunset Hills as places inside the area. About 63% of the land is in ZIP code 20190 and 37% in 20191. Reston is unincorporated: Fairfax County provides police, fire and rescue. See who to call.

How we drew this area

Wiehle-Reston East is one of three transit station areas in Fairfax County’s Comprehensive Plan for Reston. Its edges here are the county’s own, from the Reston Transit Station Areas layer in the county GIS. School and ZIP shares come from laying the FCPS attendance areas and the county ZIP code map over that boundary. Store locations are © OpenStreetMap contributors.
