On Election Day

On Nov. 3 you must vote at the polling place for your precinct. Look it up on the state voter portal or the county’s My Neighborhood tool. Polling places can change between elections, so check before you go.

Voter ID

Virginia’s voter identification chart says every in-person voter will be asked for one form of ID. Accepted forms include:

  • A Virginia driver’s license or DMV ID card, current or expired
  • A U.S. passport or passport card, or a U.S. military ID
  • A photo employee ID, or a student ID from a Virginia school or a U.S. college
  • Any federal, Virginia or local government ID card, or a voter ID card
  • A utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck with your name and address, no more than 12 months old

An out-of-state driver’s license is not accepted. A voter without acceptable ID may sign an ID confirmation statement, under penalty of a felony for false statements, and vote; a voter who does neither votes a provisional ballot.

Voting by mail

Ask for a mail ballot by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at elections.virginia.gov/absentee or through the county’s vote by mail page. Return it by mail postmarked by Nov. 3, or drop it off at the elections office, an early voting site, any polling place or a drop-off location by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
